Cosmetic Surface Quality

Cosmetic surface quality describes the degree of perfection for the polished surfaces of an optical component.   Typically, the level of freedom from the common surface imperfections scratches and digs (small pits in a polished surface) is specified.  The most common and widely accepted convention for specifying cosmetic surface quality is U.S. Military Surface Quality Specification MIL-0-13830A, although in Europe, DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm) 3140, Sheet 7 is often used.  The DIN specification is similar to the MIL specification.
